In August 2017, Munroe Bergdorf rose to international acclaim after she was made the first transgender person to front a L’Oreal campaign. Before long, however, a supposed ‘friend’ who went to University with Munroe sold a story to the Daily Mail that included screenshots from a Facebook post in which Munroe was responding to the racist events in Charlottesville. The resulting media storm changed Munroe’s life forever. After a public backlash resulting in her being fired from the campaign, she received a barrage of racist and transphobic abuse not only from the public, but mainstream media in the UK - highlighting the true state of inequality in this country. Speaking with fellow model and ally Leomie Anderson, Munroe reflects upon the hardest year of her life and how her life has changed since.

“As a trans person, there’s this whole idea that we change and that we become someone else. We don’t change and I’m not a different person. I’m a development of who I should’ve been.”
